How many days do you need in Hanoi?

Most of Hanoi's sights are in the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake, so 2–3 days is plenty to explore the city comfortably. What really adds days is the surrounding area: Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh each deserve a full day. We've put common trip lengths into the table below so you can compare them with your own schedule.

How to plan your Hanoi itinerary: 3, 4 and 5 days

A simple tip for planning Hanoi: keep your arrival and departure days in the city and put day trips on the full days in between, so flight times don't get in the way.

How to get from Hanoi airport to the city

How to explore central Hanoi

Central Hanoi splits nicely into two parts: the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake can be covered on foot, while Ba Dinh Square, the Temple of Literature and West Lake are farther apart, so it's easier to link them up by car.
