Deer in Nara Park, Nara day trip
Nara Park

Last updated: 2026-11-06 · About 9 min read

This Nara day trip guide covers how to get there from Osaka on Kintetsu or JR, how to see Nara Park and Todai-ji, opening hours for Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi, and 3 private car routes from Osaka.

Key points
  • The Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara takes about 37 minutes for 680 yen (adult), with no changes
  • JR from Osaka Station to Nara Station takes about 54 to 58 minutes for 840 yen (adult); some trains need a change at Tennoji
  • Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall is open 8:00 to 17:00 from November to March and 7:30 to 17:30 from April to October, 800 yen for adults, cash only
  • In Nara Park, only feed the deer shika senbei; stags get aggressive in autumn, so keep kids close
  • Seeing Nara Park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi in one day means a lot of walking, so families with older parents or kids may like the private car routes below

How do you get from Osaka to Nara, and is Kintetsu or JR better?

Two railways run from Osaka to Nara: Kintetsu and JR. If you stay around Namba, Kintetsu is the fastest, and Kintetsu-Nara Station is close to Nara Park. From the Umeda area you can leave from JR Osaka Station, but you arrive at JR Nara Station, a little farther from the sights.

Route Train Time Adult one way
Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara Kintetsu Rapid Express About 37 min 680 yen
Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara Kintetsu Limited Express About 35 min 680 yen
+ 520 yen express fee
JR Osaka → JR Nara JR Rapid
(some change at Tennoji)
About 54–58 min 840 yen

Checked on the official Kintetsu and JR West timetable and fare search on 2026-11-06. The Kintetsu Rapid Express needs only a basic ticket; a reserved seat on the JR Rapid costs 530 yen extra. Children ride for half price.

The trains themselves are easy. The tiring part starts after you arrive. Todai-ji says it is about a 20-minute walk east along Noborioji from Kintetsu-Nara Station; from JR Nara Station you take the city loop bus to "Todaiji Daibutsuden Kasugataisha-mae" and walk 5 more minutes. Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi also mean more walking or another bus, so the walking adds up over the day.

How should you see Nara Park and Todai-ji?

Nara Park and Todai-ji sit right next to each other, so start with the deer in the park, then walk north to Todai-ji. Give each about an hour and you will be near lunch spots around noon.

Nara Park

Suggested stay: about 1 hour

Deer in Nara Park
Nara Park

The deer of Nara Park are a national natural monument and wild animals, not pets. Nara Prefecture's July 2026 survey counted 1,687 deer in the park, so you will meet them on the lawns and approach paths. Shika senbei crackers are made from rice bran and wheat flour with no sugar or salt, and they are the only thing you may feed them.

Nara Prefecture asks visitors to never feed anything other than shika senbei; snacks, bread and vegetables can make the deer ill. Deer may charge, butt with their antlers, bite or kick, and mothers after giving birth in spring and stags in the autumn rut are more aggressive. With kids, stay beside them and do not let them approach a group of deer alone holding crackers.

Todai-ji

Suggested stay: about 1 hour

Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall
Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall

The highlight of Todai-ji is the Great Buddha Hall, a huge wooden building that houses the Great Buddha of Nara. Opening hours change by season, and in winter it opens at 8:00 and closes at 17:00:

Period Great Buddha Hall hours
April–October 7:30–17:30
November–March 8:00–17:00

The basic ticket covers the Great Buddha Hall. If you also want the Todai-ji Museum, buy the combined ticket:

Ticket Adult Elementary student
Great Buddha Hall 800 yen
(junior high and up)
400 yen
Great Buddha Hall +
Todai-ji Museum
1,200 yen 600 yen

Cash only. Todai-ji Museum: November–March 9:30–17:00 (last entry 16:30), April–October 9:30–17:30 (last entry 17:00).

Todai-ji has no parking of its own, so a private car parks at a nearby lot and you walk over. A private car skips the 20-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station altogether.

How should you see Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi?

In the afternoon you can head east to Kasuga Taisha, then south to Naramachi. Kasuga Taisha is a walk along the approach from Todai-ji, while Naramachi is south of Kintetsu-Nara Station, so the two are in different directions and take time by bus or on foot.

Kasuga Taisha

Suggested stay: about 1 hour

Stone lanterns along the Kasuga Taisha approach
Kasuga Taisha

Kasuga Taisha is a shrine over a thousand years old, with rows of weathered stone lanterns lining the approach. The main worship area is free; to pray in front of the Middle Gate and see the hanging lanterns of the corridor, you pay 700 yen for the special inner sanctuary visit. From JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara Station, take a Nara Kotsu bus to "Kasugataisha Honden" and walk 3 minutes.

Area Hours
Worship area
March–October
6:30–17:30
Worship area
November–February
7:00–17:00
Special inner visit 9:00–16:00

The special inner visit is closed all day from 12/20 to 1/7 and from around 3/8 to 3/13, and closed in the morning on festival days such as the 1st and 11th of each month. The National Treasure Museum is open 10:00–17:00, 700 yen for adults.

Naramachi

Suggested stay: about 1 hour

Traditional machiya townhouses in Naramachi
Naramachi

Naramachi spreads around Gango-ji, on land that once belonged to the temple, and townhouses and temples from the Edo to Meiji periods still stand here. Many old houses are now cafes and small shops, which makes it a good place for a slow afternoon stroll. It is about a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station.

To see inside a townhouse, visit Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie, a recreation of a late Edo to Meiji era Nara townhouse. It is free and open 9:00–17:00, closed on Mondays (or the next day if Monday is a holiday).

Is a private car a good idea with older parents or kids?

The tiring part of a Nara day trip is not the train but all the walking after you arrive: about 20 minutes from Kintetsu-Nara Station to Todai-ji, then Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi in different directions. A private car picks you up at your hotel in central Osaka and drives you between all four stops:

  • Less walking: the car parks near each sight, so older parents and kids save their energy for the Great Buddha and the deer.
  • No changes: no crowded trains from Namba or hunting for buses, and you go straight back to your hotel.
  • One price per car: fully private with no sharing, a Chinese-speaking driver, 10 hours of use, and an Alphard or HiAce to choose from.

The private car picks you up at your hotel door in central Osaka, so any area works. If you take the train yourself, Namba is the easiest base: the Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba reaches Kintetsu-Nara in about 37 minutes, closest to Nara Park. From the Umeda area, JR Osaka to Nara Station takes about 54 to 58 minutes.

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan a Nara day trip

What to watch for

The deer are wild, so feed them only shika senbei; stags are aggressive in autumn and kids need an adult beside them. Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall is open 8:00–17:00 in winter and tickets are cash only; Kasuga Taisha's special inner visit runs 9:00–16:00 and is closed from 12/20 to 1/7.

How to plan the day

Nara Park and Todai-ji in the morning, Kasuga Taisha and Naramachi in the afternoon, about an hour at each, with lunch near Todai-ji. If you want the Kasuga inner visit, move Kasuga Taisha to the morning after 9:00.

Why a private car helps

The tiring part of this trip is the walking and bus changes after you arrive, with four stops in different directions. A private car picks you up at your hotel in central Osaka and drives you between all four stops, so older parents and kids can rest in the car.
