This guide to private car day trips from Osaka covers how to reach Kyoto, Nara and Kobe Arima, how to get around once you arrive, and 3 private car routes with hotel pick-up in central Osaka.

Quick take
  • JR runs from Osaka to Kyoto, Nara and Sannomiya with no changes in 21–50 minutes; the hassle starts after you arrive
  • For Kiyomizu-dera you take a city bus to Gojozaka, then walk 10 minutes uphill; Fushimi Inari is 5 minutes by JR from Kyoto Station
  • Todai-ji in Nara is about a 20-minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station, or a wait for the city loop bus
  • Arima Onsen means 2 more changes by train from Sannomiya, or 3 changes in total from Osaka
  • With older parents, kids or a list of stops, a private car with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in central Osaka works well, and we suggest 3 routes below

Which day trips from Osaka suit a private car?

The three classic day trips from Osaka are Kyoto, Nara and Kobe Arima. All three are direct on JR, and the tiring part comes after you get off the train: city buses, uphill walks, or two more train changes before you reach the sights. Wherever you keep changing after you arrive, a private car makes the biggest difference.

Destination From Osaka Once there
Kyoto Special Rapid from Osaka
29 min direct to Kyoto
City bus to Kiyomizu-dera
JR to Fushimi Inari
Nara Yamatoji Rapid from Osaka
50 min direct to Nara
About 20 min on foot

Kobe Arima Special Rapid from Osaka

If you're travelling with older parents or kids and don't want to keep changing trains, go straight to the 3 private car routes below.

How do you get to Kiyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari in Kyoto?

The Special Rapid from JR Osaka to Kyoto takes 29 minutes with no changes, at 580 yen for adults and 290 yen for children. The time goes after Kyoto Station: Kiyomizu-dera needs a city bus, Fushimi Inari needs another JR train, and getting between the two means catching something else again.

Kiyomizu-dera

Stay: about 1.5 hours

From Kyoto Station, take city bus 206 or 100 to Gojozaka, then walk up from Gojozaka for about 10 minutes; from Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo Station it's about 25 minutes on foot. There are only two ways in, Kiyomizu-zaka and Chawan-zaka, and map apps sometimes send people along routes that don't lead to the temple, so stick to these two slopes. With a private car, the car waits in a nearby car park and you walk up the slope.

In late November the autumn evening viewing stays open until 21:30. By train you'd still need a bus and JR back to Osaka afterwards; by private car you go straight back to your hotel.

Dates Opening hours
11/21–11/30

6:00–21:30
(last entry 21:00)
12/1–12/31 6:00–18:00

Fushimi Inari Taisha

Stay: about 1 hour

The JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station to Inari Station takes just 5 minutes, and the shrine is right outside JR Inari Station; from Keihan Fushimi-Inari Station it's a 5-minute walk east. The shrine has a car park for worshippers, so a private car can drive straight there, which makes it an easy pairing with Kiyomizu-dera on the same day.

How do you get to Todai-ji in Nara, and how far is the walk?

The Yamatoji Rapid from JR Osaka to Nara takes 50 minutes with no changes, at 840 yen for adults and 420 yen for children, plus 530 yen if you want a reserved seat. From Nara Station, you still need to walk or take a bus to Todai-ji.

Todai-ji

Stay: about 1 hour

From Kintetsu-Nara Station, walk east along Noborioji for about 20 minutes; or take the city loop bus from JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara Station to Daibutsuden Kasuga-Taisha-mae and walk 5 minutes. With older parents or kids, that walk there and back takes a lot out of you. With a private car, the car waits in a car park near Todai-ji and you walk over.

Todai-ji sits inside Nara Park, so after the temple you can wander on through the park. There's no need to head back to a station, and when everyone's tired the car is there to rest in.

How do you get to Arima Onsen in Kobe, and how many changes is it?

The Special Rapid from JR Osaka to Sannomiya takes 21 minutes, at 420 yen for adults and 210 yen for children. Arima Onsen is up in the mountains beyond Sannomiya, and by train it's 2 more changes.

Changing trains from Sannomiya to Arima Onsen

From Sannomiya, take the Kobe Municipal Subway to Tanigami, change to the Kobe Electric Railway to Arimaguchi, then change again for Arima Onsen Station, about 30 minutes in all; there are also buses from Kobe Sannomiya Bus Terminal. Counting from Osaka, that's 3 changes in total, which is harder still with a change of clothes for the baths and your bags.

Arima Onsen Town and Zuihoji Park

Stay: about 2 hours

Arima Onsen Town

The onsen town has 3 car parks: Arima Onsen Car Park, the Ropeway Car Park and the Ikenobo car park, so a private car can park and you start exploring right away. Zuihoji Park has no car park of its own, so the car waits in the onsen town and you walk up.

When is a private car easier than the train?

Based on the transport above, in these situations a private car takes much of the effort out of the day:

  • With older parents or kids: Kiyomizu-dera means a city bus and an uphill walk, and Todai-ji is about 20 minutes on foot from the station, so a private car saves a lot of walking.
  • Going to Arima Onsen: by train it's 3 changes from Osaka, while a private car drives from your hotel straight to the onsen town.
  • Seeing Kiyomizu-dera at night: from 11/21 to 11/30 it's open until 21:30, and you don't need a bus and JR back to Osaka afterwards.
  • Fitting in several stops: getting between Kiyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari means catching another train or bus, while the driver takes you door to door.
  • Lots of luggage: head straight to your next hotel after the day trip without dragging bags through stations.

Which private car routes can you choose?

All 3 routes below are planned with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in central Osaka, using the opening hours above. You can adjust the order to your start time and the places you want more time at, together with your driver.

Where should you stay for day trips from Osaka?

A private car picks you up and drops you off at your hotel in central Osaka, so you can start from any area. If you're taking JR yourself, the area around Osaka Station (Umeda) is easiest: the Special Rapid to Kyoto and Sannomiya and the Yamatoji Rapid to Nara all run direct from Osaka Station.

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan a private car day trip from Osaka

Things to watch for

JR runs direct from Osaka to Kyoto, Nara and Sannomiya, and the hassle starts after you arrive: Kiyomizu-dera means a city bus and an uphill walk, Todai-ji is about 20 minutes on foot from the station, and Arima Onsen is 2 more changes from Sannomiya. Kiyomizu-dera has only two ways in, Kiyomizu-zaka and Chawan-zaka, and map apps sometimes get it wrong.

How to plan the day

Stick to one direction per day: in Kyoto, Fushimi Inari in the morning and Kiyomizu-dera in the afternoon; in Nara, Todai-ji and Nara Park; in Kobe Arima, the onsen town and a walk up to Zuihoji Park. In Kyoto from 11/21 to 11/30, you can stay into the evening for Kiyomizu-dera's evening viewing.

Why we suggest a private car

The tiring part of all three trips is the constant changes and walking after you arrive. A private car picks you up at your hotel in central Osaka and the driver takes you between the sights; older parents and kids can rest in the car, and the order of stops can change with the day. See the 3 private car routes above, or message us on LINE to plan your day.
