Japan Snow Season Guide 2026–2027: Where to See Snow, Choosing a Ski Resort, What to Wear and Getting Around

Japan snow season: ski slope in Yuzawa, Niigata
Yuzawa, Niigata

Last updated: 2026-11-06 · About 10 min read

This Japan snow season guide covers when it snows in Japan, where you are sure to see snow, ski resorts you can reach from Tokyo and Osaka, 2026–2027 opening dates, and what to wear, how trains cope and how to enjoy the snow with kids.

Quick take
  • For deep snow, January and February are the safest bet; the normal maximum snow depth is 208 cm in Yuzawa, Niigata and 177 cm near Shirakawa-go
  • Tokyo and Osaka barely get snow cover: the normal maximum depth is 6 cm in Tokyo and 1 cm in Osaka, so you need to head to the mountains or Hokkaido
  • The fastest snow from Tokyo is GALA Yuzawa (as little as 71 minutes by Shinkansen), opening December 19 for 2026–2027; Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort opened on October 31
  • From Osaka, the earliest opening is Grand Snow Okuibuki (November 13) and the closest is Rokko Snow Park (opens December 5)
  • On snowy days trains are often delayed or run fewer services, and waiting on a platform with kids and ski gear is the hard part; see the private car and transfer options below

When does it snow in Japan, and where are you sure to see it?

Most of Japan's snow falls from December to March, and the snow is deepest from late January into February. In Yuzawa, Niigata, the normal maximum snow depth is already 92 cm in December and reaches 202 cm in February; Sapporo starts seeing snow in November and averages almost 28 snowy days in December.

The table shows Japan Meteorological Agency normals for 1991–2020. The more snowfall and snow cover, the surer you are to see snow; Tokyo and Osaka get only single-digit centimetres of snowfall a year, and it melts quickly.

Shirakawa-go

For a full snowscape, Yuzawa in Niigata and the Shirakawa-go area get the deepest snow, with January averages around 0°C. Nagano City and Lake Kawaguchi don't build up much snow themselves, but the surrounding mountains and ski resorts do, and Lake Kawaguchi is most likely to have snow on the ground in January and February, with Mt Fuji behind it.

Where can I see snow or ski from Tokyo?

The usual day trips from Tokyo are GALA Yuzawa in Niigata, Karuizawa in Nagano, and the Mt Fuji area. The difference is how you get there: GALA Yuzawa and Karuizawa are on the Shinkansen, while the Fuji area means a highway bus or a car.

GALA Yuzawa

GALA Yuzawa says it is as little as 71 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, and the station is in the same building as the resort, so you can rent gear and be on the slopes straight away. The 2026–2027 season runs from Saturday December 19 to Wednesday May 5, 2027, and there is a snow play area. For access, lift tickets and rentals, see GALA Yuzawa Day Trip 2026.

Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort

This is the earliest resort near Tokyo, open since Saturday October 31 for 2026–2027, with operations planned until March 31, 2027; the West Area is open from December 19 to March 22. From the south exit of Karuizawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen it is about a 10-minute walk or a 2-minute taxi ride, and there is a free shuttle bus.

Around Mt Fuji

Snow Park Yeti, on the 2nd station of Mt Fuji in Shizuoka, was already open in early November and plans to run until March 28, 2027, with night skiing too. On the Yamanashi side, Fujiten plans to open in mid-December. If you only want Mt Fuji snow views without skiing, the Lake Kawaguchi area is beautiful; for winter itineraries see Mt Fuji Winter Day Trip 2026.

Which ski resorts can I reach from Osaka?

Kansai has fewer ski resorts, but there are still day-trip options from Osaka. The differences are how early they open and how many changes it takes; all four below have announced their 2026–2027 opening.

  • Rokko Snow Park (Hyogo): opens Saturday December 5. The resort says it is about 60 minutes by car from central Osaka; by public transport you go from stations such as Hankyu Rokko to the Rokko Cable Car (about 10 minutes), then the mountain-top bus to the "Snow Park-mae" stop.
  • Grand Snow Okuibuki (Shiga): open from Friday November 13 to Sunday April 11, 2027, 150 days in all. The resort says Osaka to JR Maibara Station takes 35 minutes, then a reservation-only shuttle bus, ¥1,000 one way for adults and ¥500 for elementary school age and under.
  • Biwako Valley (Shiga): planned to open in late December 2026; you ride a ropeway up the mountain.
  • Hakodateyama (Shiga): planned to open on Friday December 25, about 20 minutes by bus from JR Omi-Imazu Station.

All four mean a train plus a ropeway or bus, and with kids or bulky winter clothes, the changes are the most tiring part.

What does Hokkaido offer in winter?

Hokkaido is Japan's most reliable snow destination. Sapporo's normal maximum snow depth is 97 cm, and it snows almost every day from December to February (27.9 snowy days in December, 29.1 in January), while January's average daytime high is only -0.4°C.

The 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival runs from Thursday February 4 to Thursday February 11 (a public holiday), with the Odori, Susukino and Tsudome sites on the same dates. For skiing, Furano Ski Resort plans to open from Saturday November 28, 2026 to May 5, 2027, a season that lasts into Golden Week.

When do ski resorts open for 2026–2027?

The table lists only dates the resorts have published; "planned" is the resorts' own wording, and actual opening depends on snow.

Ski resort From 2026–2027 season
Karuizawa Prince Hotel Tokyo Oct 31 (Sat) –
Mar 31, 2027 (Wed)
Snow Park Yeti Tokyo Open now –

Hakodateyama Osaka Dec 25 (Fri) (planned)
Biwako Valley Osaka Late Dec (planned)
Furano Hokkaido Nov 28 (Sat) –
May 5, 2027 (Wed)

Dates without a year are in 2026. Karuizawa's West Area is open Dec 19 – Mar 22.

If you want to ski before early December, look at Karuizawa and Yeti from Tokyo or Okuibuki from Osaka; if you're going in January or February when the snow is deepest, every resort in the table is open.

What should I wear in the snow? Do I need snow boots?

Start with how cold it gets. The table shows average January highs and lows: Sapporo stays below 0°C all day, and Yuzawa and Lake Kawaguchi drop below zero in the early morning.

Station January average high January average low
Sapporo -0.4°C -6.4°C
Yuzawa 2.8°C -3.2°C
Kawaguchiko 5.5°C -5.7°C
Tokyo 9.8°C 1.2°C

Dress in layers: thermal base layer, fleece or down mid-layer and a waterproof shell. Indoors and on trains it gets warm, so being able to take layers off matters most. Feet and hands get wet first in the snow, so waterproof, non-slip snow boots and waterproof gloves matter more than a thick coat; bring a beanie and scarf too.

Whether to buy snow boots depends on how much you'll walk on snow. If you're only playing at a ski resort, waterproof boots are enough; for days spent walking on snowy, icy streets, such as Shirakawa-go or central Sapporo, wear waterproof boots with grippy soles, because ordinary trainers soak through quickly.

Does snow affect getting around?

Yes. Heavy snow can mean fewer services and delays on trains and the Shinkansen, and suspensions in severe cases. Tokyo rarely gets snow cover, but the occasional snowfall still affects trains, and stations and platforms get crowded.

The hard part of a snow trip is multiple changes and infrequent services: the Okuibuki shuttle needs booking and Hakodateyama's buses are few, so missing one means a long wait. Standing on a platform with ski wear, heavy coats and kids is more tiring than the skiing.

When planning, don't leave a snow trip for the very end of the day before you fly home, check train status the night before, and book your outbound and return transport in advance; a pre-booked airport transfer is the least stressful way to the airport.

What should I know about snow play with kids?

Children sledding at a ski resort
Rokko Snow Park

For kids who can't ski yet, a resort's snow play area is the most fun. Rokko Snow Park's Snow Land is open 9:00–17:00, separate from the slopes, with sled rental at ¥500 (plus a ¥1,000 deposit); sleds are only allowed in this area, and you can't stand, lie down or ride backwards.

On tickets, the Prince Snow Resorts group, which includes Karuizawa, offers free lift tickets for elementary school age and under, with a ¥100 fee for advance web purchase; however, preschool children can't ride the lift alone and must be with a parent. At Yeti, people only sledding or playing in the snow buy a spectator ticket, and child tickets cover ages 3 to elementary school.

Kids' gloves get wet fastest, so pack a spare pair of gloves and socks, plus hand warmers, a thermos and snacks. Snow play is tiring, so stick to one resort a day and go indoors for lunch and a rest.

How can I make snow trips easier to get to?

Winter trips mean extra stuff: ski wear, heavy coats, snow boots, and with kids, a stroller and spare clothes. In Tokyo, Lanytrip offers a Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi private car and Narita / Haneda transfers, and in Osaka Kansai Airport transfers, picking you up at your hotel door so there are no changes on a snowy day.

  • Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi 10-hour private car from Tokyo: for those who want Mt Fuji snow views and Lake Kawaguchi, travel with older parents or kids, and don't want to change buses in the snow
  • Narita / Haneda Airport ⇄ central Tokyo: for those with suitcases full of winter clothes or early-morning or late-night flights
  • Kansai Airport ⇄ central Osaka: for families with kids and large bags who want to go straight from the plane to the hotel
  • Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi 10-hour private car from Tokyo:
  • Narita / Haneda Airport ⇄ central Tokyo:
  • Kansai Airport ⇄ central Osaka:

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan Japan's snow season

Things to watch for

For deep snow, go in January or February to the mountains of Niigata and Nagano, the Shirakawa-go area or Hokkaido; central Tokyo and Osaka barely get snow cover. The key gear is waterproof, non-slip boots and gloves, and since trains are often delayed or reduced on snowy days, don't pack the day before your flight with snow plans.

How to plan it

From Tokyo, from December 19 you can do GALA Yuzawa as a Shinkansen day trip, or spend a day at Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi for snow views; from Osaka, Okuibuki opens in mid-November and Rokko in December. In Hokkaido, you can aim for the Sapporo Snow Festival from February 4 to 11, 2027.

Why we suggest a private car and pre-booked transfers

The most tiring part of a snow trip is changing trains with heavy clothing and kids, and waiting on platforms for delayed trains. A private car leaves straight from your hotel, and older parents and kids can warm up in the car; a pre-booked airport transfer means no hauling big bags up and down. See the 3 options above, or message us on LINE to plan your trip.
