This GALA Yuzawa day trip guide covers the season dates, direct Shinkansen times and fares, lift tickets and rentals, snow play and ski schools for kids, and private car routes from your Tokyo hotel.

Quick take
  • The 2026–27 season opens for skiing on 12/19 and runs to 2027/5/5; 12/12–12/18 is sightseeing only, with no skiing
  • The Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station takes as little as 71 minutes, and in winter direct trains run to Gala-Yuzawa Station, right at the slopes
  • A 1-day ticket online is 7,500 yen for adults and 3,500 yen for elementary school children; each adult can bring up to 2 preschoolers free
  • Winter rentals open at 7:30, and gloves and knit hats are for sale only, not for rent
  • The hardest part is leaving early with gear and kids, so a private car can take you from your Tokyo hotel to the station or straight to the slopes; see the 3 private car routes below

When can you ski at GALA Yuzawa?

GALA Yuzawa's big draw is simple: the Shinkansen station and the ski resort are in the same building. The 2026–27 season has a sightseeing period and a skiing period, and from 12/12 to 12/18 you can only ride the gondola for the views; the slopes stay closed however much snow there is.

Period Dates What's open
Sightseeing 2026/12/12 (Sat)–
12/18 (Fri)
Gondola and
sightseeing lift only
Skiing 2026/12/19 (Sat)–
2027/5/5 (Wed)
Skiing and
snowboarding

The runs are 35% beginner, 45% intermediate and 20% advanced, so first-timers have plenty to practise on. For the 2026–27 season the South Area is fully closed, so runs there from older guides aren't available this winter.

How do you get there from Tokyo, and when are the direct trains?

The Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station reaches GALA Yuzawa in as little as 71 minutes. In winter, JR extends regular Tanigawa trains to Gala-Yuzawa Station, so you step off the train and walk into the resort; if you miss a direct train, get off at Echigo-Yuzawa Station and take the free shuttle bus, about 10 minutes. The table shows some of the direct trains announced for 12/1–2/28, and many more seasonal trains run as well.

In December, change at Echigo-Yuzawa

The outbound direct trains 71 and 73 in the table start in January, so for the first days after skiing opens on 12/19, take the Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa and switch to the free shuttle bus. The return train 86 runs from 12/12, leaving Gala-Yuzawa at 17:04 straight for Tokyo.

Shinkansen fares

Route Adult one way Child one way
Tokyo → Gala-Yuzawa 7,130 yen 3,560 yen
Ueno → Gala-Yuzawa 6,590 yen 3,290 yen
Tokyo → Echigo-Yuzawa 6,700 yen 3,350 yen
Ueno → Echigo-Yuzawa 6,490 yen 3,240 yen

JR East "Shinkansen eTicket", regular season, ordinary reserved seat, for purchases from 2026/3/14. The adult limited express charge is 400 yen more in the peak season, 200 yen more in the busy season and 200 yen less in the off season; the child charge is half the adult charge.

From what age do kids need a train ticket?

JR East charges a child fare from age 6 to under 12, and a 6-year-old not yet in elementary school counts as an infant. Infants aged 1 to under 6 and babies under 1 ride free. If one adult or child brings more than 2 infants, the third and any more need a child ticket, and an infant taking their own reserved seat also needs a child ticket.

How much are lift tickets, and do kids need one?

GALA's gondola and lift tickets come as a 1-day ticket or a 4-hour ticket, and buying online saves 500 yen. Elementary school children need a ticket, while each adult can bring up to 2 preschoolers free; a third preschooler pays the elementary school price.

Ticket Adult Elementary school
1-day (at the counter) 8,000 yen 4,000 yen
1-day (online) 7,500 yen 3,500 yen
4-hour (at the counter) 7,500 yen 3,500 yen
4-hour (online) 7,000 yen 3,000 yen

GALA also sells an early-bird ticket for 4,800 yen until 11/30 at 23:00, so if your date is set, it's worth buying early.

How should you plan a GALA Yuzawa day trip?

Taking a weekend in January as an example, catch the earliest direct train out and the early-evening direct train back, and you get most of the day on the slopes. Here's a plan using the official timetable:

Time Plan
6:24 Tanigawa 71 from Tokyo Station
7:35 Arrive at Gala-Yuzawa, pick up rentals
(winter rentals open at 7:30)
Daytime Lessons or free skiing
Lunch at the resort
By 15:30 Last chance to rent extra gear
17:04 Return rentals, take Tanigawa 86
(returns until 17:30)
18:20 Arrive at Tokyo Station

With young kids, you don't have to take the first train. Leaving later and skiing half a day on a 4-hour ticket is easier on everyone; the toughest part is actually getting up before 6 and taking the train to Tokyo Station with all your gear, and we cover how to make that easier below.

What can first-timers and kids do?

Beginner runs include Melody (350 m) and Swan (1,050 m); practise on the short Melody run first, then move on to the longer Swan. Kids who aren't ready for the slopes can start at the Yukiasobi Park snow play area in the Central Area.

Stay: about 1 hour

Yukiasobi Park is fenced in with netting, so even little ones can play safely, and a covered snow escalator takes you up for sledding even when it's snowing. Sleds can only be used inside this area, not on the runs, and sled rental is 2,500 yen a day.

Ski schools: Giant or SORA for lessons in Chinese or English

GALA lists 5 ski schools, and all are booked on each school's own website. If you don't speak Japanese, Giant Ski School and SORA International teach in English and Chinese.

School Languages For families
GALA Ski & Snowboard School Japanese —
GALA KIDS SCHOOL Japanese From first time on skis

Giant Ski School English, Chinese,

How do rentals work, and when do they open?

You can rent a full set of gear inside the station building. In winter (12/19–4/4) rentals open at 7:30, the last rental is at 15:30 and returns close at 17:30. 1-day rental prices are below; "child" means elementary school age and younger.

Item Adult Child
Ski or snowboard set 6,500 yen 4,000 yen
Jacket and pants 5,500 yen 3,000 yen

Adult goggles are 1,800 yen and helmets 2,300 yen. Gloves and knit hats aren't for rent but are sold on site for 1,500 yen each, and you need to bring your own base layers and leggings. Kids' sizes cover boots 15–24 cm, skis 70–140 cm and wear 100–140 cm.

PICK UP BOX: skip one queue

To skip the rental queue, book a PICK UP BOX for 1,000 yen more than a standard rental, paid in advance by credit card, by 12:00 two days before. In winter, pick-up is 7:30–12:00 from 2026/12/19 to 2027/3/31; each booking covers one person, and single items can't be booked on their own.

What's the easiest way from your hotel to the slopes with gear and kids?

The Shinkansen itself takes just 71 minutes; it's the journey either side that wears you out. For the 6:24 train, kids are up before 6, and you take the train from your hotel to Tokyo Station, holding little hands and carrying gear or kids' ski wear while you find the platform. Changing trains with all those bags is hard work.

On the way back you reach Tokyo Station at 18:20 with kids who've played all day, and still have another train to your hotel. Hand those two legs to a private car: get in at your hotel door and put the gear in the boot, with no hauling bags between trains. Or ride all the way from your Tokyo hotel to the slopes; the 3 routes below show how.

Which private car routes go to GALA Yuzawa?

All 3 routes below start with pick-up at your Tokyo hotel; choose by whether you want to take the Shinkansen or ride the whole way. Start times and stops can be adjusted together with your driver.

Where should you stay?

If you're taking the Shinkansen yourself, the direct trains leave from Tokyo Station, so staying near Tokyo Station or Ueno means the fewest changes on an early start. With a private car you're picked up at your hotel door, so you can leave from anywhere in Tokyo. For an extra day of skiing, stay near Echigo-Yuzawa Station, about 10 minutes from GALA by free shuttle bus.

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan a GALA Yuzawa day trip

Things to watch for

There's no skiing from 12/12 to 12/18; the slopes open on 12/19. Outbound direct trains start in January, so in December you change to the free shuttle at Echigo-Yuzawa. Gloves and knit hats are for sale only, bring your own base layers, and lift tickets are 500 yen cheaper online.

How to plan the day

For a full day of skiing, take the 6:24 or 6:44 direct train out and Tanigawa 86 at 17:04 back, picking up rentals at 7:30 and returning them by 17:30. With little kids, leave later and spend half a day with a 4-hour ticket and Yukiasobi Park; first-timers can book a Chinese or English lesson with Giant or SORA.

Why we suggest a private car

The tiring part of this trip isn't the Shinkansen. It's squeezing onto an early train to the station with gear and kids, and changing trains again to your hotel after a full day. A private car picks you up at your hotel door, the gear goes in the boot and the kids can nap in the car, whether you only need the station legs or want to ride all the way to the slopes. See the 3 private car routes above, or message us on LINE to plan your day.
