This Yokohama day trip guide covers how to get there from Tokyo, how to order five stops from Yamashita Park to Minato Mirai, what is on in winter, and 3 private car routes from Tokyo.

Key points
  • From Shibuya, the Tokyu Toyoko Line runs straight through to Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minatomirai Line in about 36 minutes at the fastest, no transfer
  • The Minatomirai Line One-Day Pass is 460 yen for adults and 230 yen for children, good for hopping between the city sights
  • The classic order is Yamashita Park → Chinatown → Red Brick Warehouse → Air Cabin → Minato Mirai, following the harbour west
  • Red Brick Warehouse Building 1 opens 10:00–19:00, Building 2 11:00–20:00; the Christmas Market runs Nov 20 – Dec 25, 2026
  • Traveling with parents or kids and want to skip the transfers? See the private car routes below, with pick-up at your Tokyo hotel

How do I get from Tokyo to Yokohama by train?

If you are staying around Shibuya or Shinjuku, the Tokyu Toyoko Line is the most direct option. It runs through to the Minatomirai Line at Yokohama Station, so the same train continues to Minatomirai, Nihon-odori and Motomachi-Chukagai. From the Tokyo Station or Ueno area, you can take JR to Sakuragicho or Ishikawacho and walk or transfer to the sights from there.

Section Time
Shibuya → Motomachi-Chukagai About 36 min at fastest
(through service, no transfer)
Yokohama → Motomachi-Chukagai About 7 min

Express and limited express trains on the Toyoko Line cost the regular fare, with no surcharge. Some times of day have no through trains.

Once in Yokohama, the sights are spread along the Minatomirai Line. The One-Day Pass costs 460 yen for adults and 230 yen for children and is sold at station ticket machines. The trains are easy; what wears you out is getting on and off several times a day, plus the walking in between. If you are with older parents or small kids, take a look at the private car routes below.

How should I plan a day in Yokohama?

The smoothest plan is to start at Yamashita Park and work along the waterfront toward Minato Mirai: the sea in the morning, lunch in Chinatown, the Red Brick Warehouse in the afternoon, then the Air Cabin across to Minato Mirai. The suggested stays below follow the itinerary of Lanytrip's Yokohama private car tour.

Yamashita Park

Suggested stay: about 80 min

Yamashita Park waterfront and Hikawa Maru
Yamashita Park

Yamashita Park is Yokohama's best-known waterfront park, opened in 1930, with a promenade along the harbour. Its rose garden has about 160 varieties and 1,900 plants, and it is a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 of Motomachi-Chukagai Station. The NYK Hikawa Maru ocean liner is moored next to the park and open for visits:

Hikawa Maru admission Fee
General 300 yen
Age 65+ 200 yen
Junior high, high school and elementary students 100 yen

Hikawa Maru is open 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30) and closed on Mondays (or the next weekday if Monday is a holiday). Cash only.

Yokohama Chinatown

Suggested stay: about 90 min

Yokohama Chinatown gate
Yokohama Chinatown

Chinatown is a short walk from Yamashita Park and is the largest Chinatown in Japan, with more than 400 shops listed on its official site, so lunch, snacks and souvenirs are all in one place. The district has 10 gates; Choyomon on the Yamashita Park side is the largest at 13.5 m tall, and you pass through it coming from Motomachi-Chukagai Station. The Chinatown Food Festival runs through November, until Nov 30 in 2026, a good chance to try Shanghai crab.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Suggested stay: about 75 min

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

The Red Brick Warehouse is a century-old brick building turned into a shopping complex, split into Building 1 and Building 2, with shops, cafés and restaurants and events on the plaza out front all year. The two buildings keep different hours, and Building 2 stays open later:

Building Opening hours
Building 1 10:00–19:00
Building 2 11:00–20:00

Cafés and restaurants set their own hours. By train it is about 6 minutes on foot from Bashamichi or Nihon-odori Station, and about 12 minutes from Minatomirai Station.

YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN

Suggested stay: about 15 min

YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN over Minato Mirai
YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN

YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN is Japan's first urban circulating ropeway, linking JR Sakuragicho Station with Unga Park in the Shinko district. Walk from the Red Brick Warehouse to Unga Park Station, and a one-way ride gives you an aerial view of the Minato Mirai towers and harbour. You get off at Sakuragicho, right where Minato Mirai begins.

Minato Mirai

Suggested stay: about 120 min

Minato Mirai Ferris wheel and malls
Minato Mirai

Minato Mirai is packed with shopping malls and a giant Ferris wheel, and the last two hours of the day are best spent shopping here. Cosmo Clock 21 at Yokohama Cosmo World costs 1,000 yen per ride, and after dark you get the harbour lights. When you are done, you head straight back to the hotel without carrying shopping bags onto a crowded train.

What is on in Yokohama in winter?

The big winter event is the Christmas Market at the Red Brick Warehouse, held from November 20 to December 25, 2026 on the event plaza and in Red Brick Park. This year's centrepiece is a live Christmas tree about 11 m tall, and entry starts from 500 yen. With the historic buildings and harbour lights, it is at its best from early evening, so put it at the end of the day before heading back to Tokyo.

Is a private car a good idea with parents or kids?

Yokohama's sights are close together, but you still get on and off trains several times and walk between stations and sights. Add the round trip from Tokyo and it gets tiring with older parents, small kids or a stroller. A private car leaves from your hotel in central Tokyo, and the driver drops you at each sight:

  • No transfers: straight from your Tokyo hotel to Yamashita Park, with no changing trains at Shibuya or Yokohama.
  • Less walking: walk from Yamashita Park to Chinatown, ride the rest, and save your energy for exploring.
  • Bags stay in the car: leave your Chinatown and Minato Mirai shopping in the car and go straight back to the hotel.

Lanytrip's Yokohama private car comes with 10 hours of use and a Chinese-speaking driver, in an Alphard (or similar) or a Toyota HiAce, at one price per car, never shared.

What private car routes are there for Yokohama?

All 3 routes start from your hotel in central Tokyo; Route 1 is Lanytrip's bookable tour. You can adjust the order around your start time and where you want to linger.
