Universal Studios Japan Access 2026: How to Get There, Luggage Storage and Last Trains Back
This guide to getting to Universal Studios Japan covers how to travel from Kansai Airport, Namba, Umeda, Shin-Osaka, Tennoji and Kyoto, where to leave your suitcase, and how to get back to your hotel after closing, plus transfers between central Osaka hotels and the park.
- From the city you always head for Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line: Umeda has direct trains, 14 minutes and 200 yen for adults, while Namba, Shin-Osaka and Tennoji mostly change at Nishikujo
- Kansai Airport has a direct Limousine Bus for 1,800 yen, but the last one leaves Terminal 1 at 17:10; by JR you change at Nishikujo
- Suitcases are not allowed in the park and there is no luggage storage inside, so use the lockers outside or send bags to your hotel
- Tickets do not allow re-entry, and squeezing onto a train back to the hotel after closing is the hardest part with kids
- With kids, for an early entry and a ride back after the night parade, you can book a transfer between your central Osaka hotel and the park; see the transfer options below
How do you get to Universal Studios Japan from around Osaka?
Wherever you start, you are heading for Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line. Train times include changes and waiting, so the more changes, the longer the real journey; check which line is near your hotel before you book.
| From | Route | Time | Adult one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansai Airport | Limousine Bus direct |
About 50–70 min | 1,800 yen |
| Kansai Airport | JR Kanku Rapid change at Nishikujo |
About 1 hr 20 min | 1,180 yen |
| Osaka-Namba | Hanshin to Nishikujo change to JR |
About 13 min on board | 400 yen |
| JR Namba | JR, 2 changes | About 39 min | 200 yen |
| Osaka / Umeda | JR direct or change at Nishikujo |
14–16 min | 200 yen |
| Shin-Osaka | JR, 2 changes | About 25 min | 240 yen |
| Tennoji | JR, change at Nishikujo | 26–27 min | 240 yen |
| Kyoto | JR Special Rapid to Osaka then 2 changes |
About 50 min | 840 yen |
Child fares are half the adult fare. JR times are based on weekday morning trains; weekend timetables differ.
With kids or a stroller, the number of changes matters more than the fare: every change means folding the stroller and finding another lift. To go straight from your hotel to the park, see the transfer options below.
How do you get from Kansai Airport straight to the park?
From the airport there are two main options: the Limousine Bus and JR. The difference is whether you drag your bags through a change, and whether your landing time fits the bus timetable.
Limousine Bus: no changes, but it stops in the afternoon
Kansai Airport Transportation's Nanko, Tempozan and Universal Studios Japan line costs 1,800 yen for adults and 900 yen for children, or 3,300 yen return (valid 14 days, no child return). No reservation is needed, it is first come first served, and bags go in the hold, up to 2 per person and 30 kg in total.
| Direction | First bus | Last bus |
|---|---|---|
| Airport Terminal 1 → USJ |
8:20 | 17:10 |
| Airport Terminal 2 → USJ |
9:17 | 16:57 |
| USJ → Airport |
10:50 | 19:00 |
What matters is your landing time, not 17:10 itself: getting from the plane to the arrivals hall takes a while, so with an afternoon flight plan what you will do if you miss the bus. If you land at Terminal 2, take the free shuttle to Terminal 1 for the railway station, about 7–9 minutes.
JR Kanku Rapid: a little cheaper, with a change at Nishikujo
An ordinary JR ticket is all you need: 1,180 yen for adults and 590 yen for children. Weekday morning trains take about 1 hour 20 minutes, changing to the JR Yumesaki Line at Nishikujo with a wait of about 12 minutes. Platforms 1–4 at Nishikujo have lifts to the ticket gates, and so do the platforms at Universal City, so you will not be carrying bags up stairs.
HARUKA or Nankai: one more change
Another option is the HARUKA to Tennoji, then JR to Nishikujo and the Yumesaki Line to Universal City, about 1 hour 8 minutes with 2 changes. Visitors entering Japan on a foreign passport for a short stay can reserve a HARUKA one-way ticket before departure through an overseas travel agent or JR West online: 1,600 yen to Tennoji, plus 240 yen from Tennoji to Universal City. If you are staying in Namba, the Nankai Rapi:t reaches Namba in as little as 34 minutes for 1,560 yen with the Kanku Tokuwari discount; the easiest way is a pre-booked transfer or the Rapi:t to your Namba hotel to drop your bags first, then on to the park.
Taxis and transfers
Kansai Airport's taxi estimate to USJ is about 50 minutes, 19,710 yen plus 2,260 yen in tolls; taxis at the airport run on the meter, with a 20% surcharge from 22:00 to 5:00. On arrival day with kids and big suitcases, you can also book a Kansai Airport transfer to your central Osaka hotel, drop your bags and head to the park early the next morning.
Staying in Namba: Hanshin or JR?
On this route, "Namba" means two different stations with different fares and numbers of changes, so check which one your hotel is near.
| Station | Route | Time | Adult one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka-Namba (Hanshin) |
Hanshin Namba Line to Nishikujo change to JR Yumesaki Line |
About 13 min on board | 400 yen |
| JR Namba | JR to Imamiya Loop Line to Nishikujo then Yumesaki Line |
About 15 min on board about 39 min with waits |
200 yen |
JR Namba is half the price, but you change twice, and the weekday morning train takes 39 minutes including waits. From Osaka-Namba you buy separate Hanshin and JR tickets but change only once, at Nishikujo, which is easier with kids and a stroller.
Do you need to change trains from Umeda, Shin-Osaka or Tennoji?
JR Osaka Station has trains that run straight onto the Yumesaki Line: for example, the 10:00 weekday local bound for Sakurajima reaches Universal City in 14 minutes with no change, for 200 yen. Other trains change at Nishikujo and take about 16 minutes.
Shin-Osaka needs 2 changes, about 25 minutes for 240 yen; Tennoji changes at Nishikujo, about 26–27 minutes for 240 yen. From all of these, you join the Yumesaki Line at Nishikujo.
How long does it take from Kyoto?
| Route | Time | Adult one way |
|---|---|---|
| JR Special Rapid to Osaka then 2 changes |
About 50 min | 840 yen |
| Limited Express Thunderbird to Osaka then 2 changes |
About 47 min | 1,930 yen |
| Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka then 3 changes |
About 52 min | 3,340 yen |
The three routes are only minutes apart and none of them saves a change, so the real difference is the fare, and the JR Special Rapid is the best value. If you stay around Kawaramachi or Gion you first need to get to JR Kyoto Station, and on a day trip with kids you face 2 more changes on the way back at night.
Can you take a suitcase into the park, and where can you leave it?
No. Suitcases, trolley bags and similar large bags are not allowed in the park, and neither is anything too big for the X-ray machine (380 × 400 × 280 mm or larger). Strollers and wheelchairs are fine, but there is no luggage storage inside, so decide where your suitcase goes before the day.
Lockers outside the park
The official lockers are outside the park in front of the security check, in cashless and cash-only versions, and can be used until 2 hours after closing. After that your bags are removed and held; you collect them from Guest Services the next day or later, pay a storage fee and show photo ID.
| Locker | Fee |
|---|---|
| Cashless S | 500 yen |
| Cashless L | 1,000 yen |
| Cashless XL | 1,500 yen |
| Cash S | 500 yen |
| Cash L | 1,000 yen |
| Cash XXL | 2,000 yen |
Cashless lockers need a contactless credit card; keep the receipt printed when you lock it, as you need it to open the locker.
Send bags to your hotel from Universal City Station
Universal City and Nishikujo stations have pikuraku PORTER delivery lockers: put your bag in, choose "deliver to hotel" on the screen and pay by card, and it reaches your hotel by about 20:00 the same day while you enjoy the park hands-free. Drop-off closes at 14:00, delivery is only to listed hotels you are staying at that night (about 350 in Osaka and 270 in Kyoto), and the locker is 33 cm wide, so anything wider will not fit.
| Locker | To an Osaka hotel | To a Kyoto hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Large (large suitcase) | 2,800 yen | 3,300 yen |
| Medium (small suitcase) | 2,300 yen | 2,800 yen |
| Small (everyday bag) | 1,900 yen | 2,400 yen |
Price per locker door; any number of items as long as they fit.
This works well when you change hotels that day, for example checking out in Osaka and staying in Kyoto that night: send your bags from Universal City in the morning, head back to Kyoto hands-free and pick them up at the hotel.
Same-day delivery from Kansai Airport
The delivery counters in Kansai Airport Terminal 1 (Yamato Transport, 4F North, and JAL ABC, 1F temporary counter, both 6:30–22:30) can send bags to your accommodation the same day. Hand them over after landing and go to the park; if you land at Terminal 2, go to Terminal 1 first.
Drop bags at your hotel first
You do not have to visit on arrival day: keep that day for travel and go in early the next morning, and luggage is no longer a problem. If you land in the afternoon and still want to go, the park has a Twilight Pass with entry from 15:00, so you can drop your bags at the hotel first. Apart from annual passes, tickets do not allow re-entry, so once inside you cannot pop back to the hotel; sort out your luggage before you go in.
If you stay until closing, are there still trains back?
Closing times vary by day, and on late days the park is open until 22:00. Below are the weekday last departures from Universal City Station; to reach the airport after closing you have only 20 minutes for the JR, before even collecting bags from a locker and walking to the station.
| To | Leaves Universal City | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Kansai Airport (JR) | 22:20 | 23:34 |
| Kansai Airport (Limousine Bus) |
19:00 | Terminal 1 19:50 |
| Kyoto | 23:37 | 0:30 |
| Osaka Station | 0:02 | 0:15 |
Weekday trains; on Saturdays the JR to Kansai Airport leaves at 22:09.
After the night parade, the hardest part is riding the train with a sleeping child in your arms: Kyoto needs 2 changes, and if you continue from Osaka Station you also race the last Osaka Metro train. Taxis queue at the stand in the transport plaza and cannot be booked or called, so the line can be long when it is busy. To go straight from the park to your hotel, you can book a transfer from USJ to your central Osaka hotel.
How do you book a transfer?
Lanytrip offers transfers between central Osaka hotels and Universal Studios Japan, in vehicles such as the Alphard or HiAce, with the whole family in one car. The car picks up and drops off at the drop-off area in the official car park, so no change at Nishikujo and no taxi queue.
- Central Osaka hotel → USJ (early entry): Good for families with kids or a stroller who want to be in as soon as the park opens. Suitcases are not allowed in the park, so if you change hotels that day, leave your bags at the hotel or send them on to the next one.
- USJ → central Osaka hotel (after the night parade): Good for families who want to stay until closing and watch the night parade without carrying a sleeping child onto the train. Closing times vary and are as late as 22:00 on some days, so just tell us your park date when you book.
- Kansai Airport → central Osaka hotel (drop bags first): Good for families who land too late for the 17:10 Limousine Bus, or travel with kids and two or more big suitcases. To visit on arrival day, the Twilight Pass lets you in from 15:00, so drop your bags at the hotel first.

Which area is most convenient to stay in?
The park has 7 official hotels right next to it, and some Limousine Buses stop at Hotel Kintetsu Universal City. In the city, a booked transfer, or a direct train from Umeda and Osaka Station, is easiest; in Namba, pick a hotel near Hanshin's Osaka-Namba Station so you change only once, at Nishikujo.
Shin-Osaka and Tennoji also change at Nishikujo, while Kyoto takes 2 changes and about 50 minutes, which is tiring as a day trip with kids. With a booked transfer you can leave from any central Osaka hotel, so you do not have to choose by station.
Summary: what to watch for and how to plan your USJ day
Things to watch for
Suitcases are not allowed in the park and tickets do not allow re-entry, so deal with luggage before you go in: outside lockers run until 2 hours after closing, and hotel delivery from Universal City closes at 14:00. The Limousine Bus from Kansai Airport leaves Terminal 1 for the last time at 17:10, and JR means a change at Nishikujo.
How to plan the day
Drop your bags at the hotel on arrival day and go in early the next morning; from Umeda the direct JR trains are fastest, and from Namba take Hanshin. If you stay until closing, the last weekday JR leaves for the airport at 22:20 and for Kyoto at 23:37, so leave early if you are flying that night.
Why we suggest booking a transfer
With kids, the tiring parts are rushing for an early train, changing at Nishikujo and getting a child back to the hotel after closing. A transfer between your central Osaka hotel and the park takes you from the hotel door to the park and back after the night parade, and the kids can sleep in the car. See the transfer options above, or message us on LINE to plan your day.
