Tokyo Private Car Day Trips 2026: Lake Kawaguchi, Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura and Karuizawa Itineraries and Transport Guide
This guide to private car day trips from Tokyo covers how to reach Lake Kawaguchi, Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura and Karuizawa, when the last trains leave, and 5 private car routes with hotel pick-up in Tokyo.
- The Fuji Excursion runs direct to Lake Kawaguchi, but the last train back leaves Kawaguchiko at 17:41
- A Hakone loop means 4 types of transport: mountain railway, cable car, ropeway and cruise boat, and the ropeway closes at 16:15 in December and January
- Nikko Toshogu and Oku-Nikko are two separate areas, and for Senjugahama you switch to the low-emission bus at Akanuma
- The Enoden in Kamakura is often packed; Karuizawa has a direct Shinkansen, but local taxis are limited
- With older parents, kids, lots of luggage or plans to stay out late, a private car with pick-up and drop-off in Tokyo's 23 wards works well, and we suggest 5 routes below
Which day trips from Tokyo suit a private car?
The classic day trips from Tokyo head to Lake Kawaguchi, Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura and Karuizawa. Each one is hard by train for a different reason: some mean constant changes, some have an early last train, and some leave you hunting for a bus or taxi once you arrive. A private car makes the biggest difference where there are many changes or the last train leaves early.
| Destination | From Tokyo | Once there |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Kawaguchi | Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku direct to Kawaguchiko |
Sightseeing bus to the lakeside |
| Hakone | Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto |
Mountain railway → cable car → ropeway → cruise boat |
| Nikko | Limited express from Asakusa or JR Shinjuku to Tobu-Nikko |
Bus to Toshogu low-emission bus in Oku-Nikko |
| Kamakura | Odakyu to Fujisawa then the Enoden |
Hop on and off the Enoden |
| Karuizawa | Hokuriku Shinkansen direct from Tokyo Station |
Bus or taxi to Kyu-Karuizawa |
Travelling with older parents or kids and tired of changing trains? Skip ahead to the 5 private car routes below.
How do you get to Lake Kawaguchi, and when is the last train back?
The Fuji Excursion limited express runs direct from JR Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station with no changes. The first train, No. 3, leaves Shinjuku at 7:30 and arrives at 9:28. There are no unreserved seats, so you need a reserved-seat or seat-unspecified limited express ticket, on sale from 10:00 one month before travel.
Plan around the 17:41 train
The last train back is No. 48, leaving Kawaguchiko at 17:41 and reaching Shinjuku at 19:48 on weekdays or 19:40 on weekends and holidays; the one before it is No. 44 at 16:48. That is as late as the train gets you back to Tokyo, so if you want to stay into the evening, a private car lets you choose your own return time. Extra trains also run in autumn and winter 2026:
| Days | Extra trains | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Weekdays | Nos. 93 and 94 | 10/22–12/29 1/12–2/26 |
| Weekends and holidays |
Nos. 81 and 78 | 10/24–2/28 |
Autumn leaves and Mt Fuji in winter
The Fujikawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival runs 11/7–11/29 in 2026, with illuminations until 21:00. There is a no-vehicle section next to the Momiji Corridor, so with a private car you park in the car park and walk in. The Fuji Subaru Line closes its upper section in winter: in winter 2025–26 it only ran up to the Yongome Osawa car park after 1/18 and fully reopened on 4/18, so in winter, plan your Lake Kawaguchi day around the lakeside and the views of Mt Fuji.
How do you get around Hakone, and how many changes is it?
The Odakyu Romancecar takes 75 minutes or more from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. The highway bus from Shinjuku to Hakone Togendai takes 145 minutes or more and does not stop at Hakone-Yumoto Station. The Hakone Freepass covers the transport inside Hakone, but the Romancecar needs a separate limited express ticket.
The transport on a Hakone loop
| Transport | Section | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Hakone Tozan Railway |
Hakone-Yumoto → Gora | About 40 min |
| Hakone Tozan Cable Car |
Gora → Sounzan | About 10 min |
| Hakone Ropeway |
Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai |
About 10 min per section |
| Hakone Sightseeing Cruise |
Togendai → Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone |
About 25–40 min |
A full loop means 4 types of transport inside Hakone alone, plus a bus to get back. With older parents or kids, every change is another queue and another platform, while a private car drives you straight to Owakudani and Lake Ashi.
The ropeway closes early in winter
| Period | Hours |
|---|---|
| February–November | 9:00–17:00 |
| December–January | 9:00–16:15 |
The ropeway may stop for strong wind, lightning, an approaching typhoon or rising volcanic gas levels, and you then detour by bus. In winter, visit Owakudani in the morning to be safe. Fares and loop details are in Hakone Day Trip 2026.
How do you get to Nikko, and how do you fit in Oku-Nikko?
Nikko Toshogu and Oku-Nikko are two separate areas: Toshogu is in Nikko town, Oku-Nikko is up in the mountains. From Tokyo you take a limited express to Tobu-Nikko and then a bus to the sights, so doing both in one day means a lot of changes.
| From | Train | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Asakusa | Kegon limited express | About 1 hr 50 min |
| JR Shinjuku | JR limited express Nikko | About 2 hr |
| Utsunomiya | JR Nikko Line | About 45 min |
Last limited expresses back
| Train | Leaves Tobu-Nikko | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Spacia Nikko No. 4 | 16:38 | JR Shinjuku 18:35 |
| Spacia X No. 12 | 17:44 | Asakusa 19:35 |
| Kegon No. 52 | 18:41 | Asakusa 20:35 |
The last limited express to Asakusa is Kegon No. 52 at 18:41. The Spacia Nikko, which runs through onto JR lines, cannot be boarded with PASMO or Suica, so buy the limited express and basic fare tickets in advance.
Oku-Nikko means another bus
The bus toward Yumoto Onsen from JR Nikko or Tobu-Nikko Station takes about 70 minutes to Akanuma. For Senjugahama, Odashirogahara or Saino-ko, you change to the low-emission bus at the Akanuma Shako stop, which costs 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for children one way. The low-emission bus runs from about late April to late November, starting 4/25 in 2026, so if you want Senjugahama in autumn, book your day early.
How do you get to Kamakura, and what should families know?
Take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Fujisawa and change to the Enoden for Kamakura, just one change. Odakyu's Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass from Shinjuku costs 1,640 yen for adults and 430 yen for children, valid for one day, with one return trip to Fujisawa and unlimited rides on the Odakyu Line beyond Fujisawa and on the Enoden.
The tiring part of Kamakura is that the Enoden is often packed: queuing on the platform, squeezing into carriages and changing at Fujisawa all wear you out. With older parents, kids or a stroller, a private car means less walking and fewer changes, with the driver taking you between Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the Great Buddha and Enoshima. For opening hours, admission and the winter illuminations on Enoshima, see Kamakura and Enoshima Day Trip 2026.
How do you get to Karuizawa, and how do you get around once there?
The Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station reaches Karuizawa in about 1 hour, served by Asama and some Hakutaka trains. Trains back run late: the last one toward Tokyo is the Hakutaka at 22:21, on weekdays and on weekends and holidays.
The real question in Karuizawa is how you get around after arriving. Local taxis are limited and you may have to wait in busy periods, and a local bus runs from the station to Kyu-Karuizawa. With older parents, kids or lots of luggage, a private car takes you from your Tokyo hotel straight to Kyu-Karuizawa, with no taxi queue at the station.
When is a private car easier than the train?
Based on the transport above, these are the situations where a private car saves you a lot of effort:
- You want to stay out late: the last Fuji Excursion leaves Kawaguchiko at 17:41. If you want the Momiji Corridor illuminations until 21:00, a private car lets you set your own return time.
- Two mountain areas in one day: Toshogu plus Oku-Nikko, or the full Hakone loop, mean many changes, and with older parents or kids every change is another platform.
- Hakone in winter: the ropeway closes at 16:15 in December and January and may stop for weather; with a private car you don't need to watch the ropeway hours.
- No crowded trains: the Enoden is often packed, while in a private car the whole family rides together and the stroller and bags stay in the car.
- Lots of luggage: you can go straight to your next hotel after the day trip without dragging bags through stations.
Which private car routes can you choose?
All 5 routes below are planned as a 10-hour private car with pick-up and drop-off in Tokyo's 23 wards, using the hours and timetables above. The order can be adjusted to your start time and where you want to linger, together with your driver.

Where should you stay for day trips from Tokyo?
A private car picks you up and drops you off at your hotel anywhere in Tokyo's 23 wards, so any area works. If you go by train, choose a base near the departure station: stay in Shinjuku for Lake Kawaguchi, Hakone and Kamakura, since the Fuji Excursion, the Romancecar and the Odakyu Line all leave from there. The Kegon and Spacia X to Nikko leave from Asakusa, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa leaves from Tokyo Station.
Summary: what to watch for and how to plan a private car day trip from Tokyo
Things to watch for
By train, the last trains back are earlier than you might expect: 17:41 from Lake Kawaguchi and 18:41 for the last limited express from Nikko to Asakusa, and the Hakone Ropeway closes at 16:15 in winter. Hakone means 4 types of transport, Senjugahama in Oku-Nikko means switching to the low-emission bus at Akanuma, and the Enoden in Kamakura is often packed.
How to plan the day
Pick one direction per day: the lake and the Momiji Corridor at Lake Kawaguchi, Owakudani and Lake Ashi in Hakone, Toshogu and Oku-Nikko in Nikko, Hachimangu, the Great Buddha and Enoshima in Kamakura, or straight to Kyu-Karuizawa. In November you can stay at Lake Kawaguchi for the festival illuminations.
Why we suggest a private car
The tiring part of these trips is constant changes, packed trains and racing for the last train. A private car picks you up at your hotel in Tokyo's 23 wards, so there are no changes and no last train to worry about; older parents and kids can rest in the car, and the order of stops can change with the day. See the 5 private car routes above, or message us on LINE to plan your day.
