This guide to getting from Osaka to Kyoto covers the 4 ways to travel (JR, Hankyu, Keihan and Shinkansen), how to go from Umeda, Namba and Shin-Osaka, and which line suits each part of Kyoto, plus how to move hotels with luggage and how to book a transfer.

Quick take
  • From Umeda to Kyoto Station, the JR Special Rapid takes 29 minutes for 580 yen; to Kawaramachi, Hankyu takes 43 minutes for 410 yen
  • For Gion-Shijo, take the subway to Yodoyabashi and change to the Keihan; the Keihan Limited Express takes 48–50 minutes
  • The Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka takes 13–14 minutes, and bags over 160 cm in total dimensions need an oversized-baggage seat booked in advance
  • Moving hotels with big bags? Delivery lockers at JR Osaka, Shin-Osaka and other stations take bags until 14:00 and deliver to your Kyoto hotel the same day
  • With older parents, kids or lots of luggage, you can book a transfer from your central Osaka hotel to your Kyoto hotel; see the transfer options below

What are the ways to get from Osaka to Kyoto, and how do they differ?

There are 4 ways from Osaka to Kyoto: the JR Special Rapid, Hankyu, Keihan and the Shinkansen. Which to choose depends on where you board and which part of Kyoto you are heading for: JR stops at Kyoto Station, Hankyu at Kawaramachi and Karasuma, and Keihan at Gion-Shijo and Sanjo.

Times are based on weekday morning trains; the Keihan fare does not include the subway to Yodoyabashi.

JR Osaka Station has no Shinkansen; you board it at Shin-Osaka. Neither Hankyu nor Keihan goes to JR Kyoto Station, so check which station your hotel is near first and then pick the line.

How do you go from Umeda, Namba or Shin-Osaka?

Times below are time on board for each leg, not including walking inside stations or waiting; the subway, Hankyu, Keihan and JR are all separate tickets.

From Umeda: JR and Hankyu are both here

Hankyu Osaka-umeda, the subway's Umeda Station and JR Osaka Station are separate stations, so factor in the walk between them if you have bags. For the Keihan, you need one more subway stop to Yodoyabashi.

From Namba: start on the Midosuji Line

There is no direct JR to Kyoto from Namba, so first take the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line north: 9 minutes and 240 yen to Umeda, or 6 minutes and 190 yen to Yodoyabashi. From Shinsaibashi it is 4 minutes to Yodoyabashi and 6–7 minutes to Umeda.

From Namba to Gion, a booked transfer straight to Gion, or the Keihan, is the smoothest; the Keihan needs no further change to Gion-Shijo. For the Kyoto Station area, change to the JR Special Rapid at Umeda.

From Shin-Osaka: direct by JR, or back down by subway

Shin-Osaka has two direct options to Kyoto Station: the JR Special Rapid and the Shinkansen. For Kawaramachi or Gion, ride the Midosuji Line south to Hankyu or Keihan; Shin-Osaka to Yodoyabashi is about 10 minutes and 240 yen.

Which line should you take for Gion, Kawaramachi or Arashiyama?

Start from the part of Kyoto where your hotel or first stop is: JR for the Kyoto Station area, Hankyu for Kawaramachi and Karasuma, and Keihan for Gion and Sanjo.

Area of Kyoto Line Get off at
Kyoto Station area JR Special Rapid, Shinkansen Kyoto
Kawaramachi, Karasuma Hankyu Kyoto-kawaramachi, Karasuma
Gion, Sanjo Keihan Gion-Shijo, Sanjo
Demachiyanagi Keihan Demachiyanagi
Arashiyama Hankyu or JR Hankyu Arashiyama
JR Saga-Arashiyama
Fushimi Inari JR or Keihan JR Inari
Keihan Fushimi-Inari
京都東山 八坂塔
Higashiyama, Kyoto

Gion-Shijo is on the Keihan line, so from Yodoyabashi there is no change; the Keihan Limited Express does not stop at Kiyomizu-Gojo or Fushimi-Inari. Arashiyama has two stations, Hankyu Arashiyama and JR Saga-Arashiyama, and both need one change. Fushimi Inari Taisha is right outside JR Inari Station, 5 minutes from Kyoto Station; by Keihan, get off at Fushimi-Inari and walk 5 minutes east.

Are the Shinkansen, reserved seats and rail passes worth it?

From Shin-Osaka to Kyoto, the Shinkansen is about 10 minutes faster than the JR Special Rapid; the extra money buys a shorter ride and a seat. At Kyoto Station the Shinkansen and conventional lines use different ticket gates, so you head in a different direction when you get off.

Book a seat for big luggage on the Shinkansen

Oversized baggage with total dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm needs a seat with an oversized-baggage area booked in advance on the Tokaido Shinkansen, at no extra charge; bringing it on without a booking costs a 1,000 yen fee, and anything over 250 cm is not allowed. This rule does not apply on conventional lines such as the JR Special Rapid.

Options for a more comfortable ride

Option Section Cost
Shinkansen reserved seat Shin-Osaka→Kyoto Hikari 2,870 yen
Nozomi 3,080 yen
Limited Express
Thunderbird
Osaka→Kyoto 1,670 yen
Special Rapid A-Seat JR Osaka→Kyoto Ticket + 600 yen
Hankyu PRiVACE Osaka-umeda→Kyoto-kawaramachi Ticket + 500 yen
Keihan Premium Car Yodoyabashi→Gion-Shijo Ticket + 500 yen

Shinkansen and Thunderbird costs include the basic fare.

The Thunderbird is all reserved seats and reaches Kyoto in 27 minutes from Osaka Station, with no need to go to Shin-Osaka. The Special Rapid A-Seat can only be booked on e5489; Hankyu PRiVACE and Keihan Premium Car open for booking 14 days before travel, and Keihan's eligible trains are marked [P] in the timetable.

Can you still buy a rail pass?

The Kansai Area Pass stopped being sold at the end of September 2026, though passes already bought can be used within their validity. The WEST QR Kansai Pass costs 2,700 yen for a 1-day adult pass but does not cover the Shinkansen or limited expresses other than the HARUKA. Keihan's Kyoto-Osaka sightseeing pass for overseas visitors is 1,650 yen, while Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo is 490 yen one way, so a single round trip does not justify the pass.

How do you move hotels with luggage?

On moving day, the 29 minutes on the train are the easy part; the effort is getting from the hotel to the station, changing inside stations, and walking from the station to the next hotel. If there is a gap between check-out and check-in, your bags come sightseeing with you.

Take them on the train yourself

Hankyu and Keihan both allow free carry-on luggage up to 250 cm in total dimensions, 30 kg and 2 items, though you may be refused when trains are crowded. At Kyoto Station there are lifts from the Central and West exits to the platforms, so you can move without stairs.

Send them to your Kyoto hotel by delivery locker

pikuraku PORTER is JR West's luggage delivery locker: put your bag in, choose "deliver to hotel" on the screen and pay, and pick it up at your Kyoto hotel the same day while you travel hands-free and even sightsee on the way. There are lockers at JR Osaka, Shin-Osaka, Hankyu Osaka-umeda, Kintetsu Osaka-Namba and more.

Locker To an Osaka hotel To a Kyoto hotel
Large (large suitcase) 2,800 yen 3,300 yen
Medium (small suitcase) 2,300 yen 2,800 yen
Small (everyday bag) 1,900 yen 2,400 yen

Price per locker door; any number of items as long as they fit. Pay by transit IC card or credit card.

Drop-off closes at 14:00 and bags arrive by about 20:00 the same evening; your hotel must be on the list (about 270 in Kyoto), and the locker is 33 cm wide, so anything wider will not fit. Sending bags from Kyoto Station to Osaka hotels is not available, so this only works from Osaka to Kyoto.

One car straight to the next hotel

With older parents or kids, more bags than one person can handle, or two hotels that are not near a station, a booked transfer drives you from your Osaka hotel door straight to your Kyoto hotel, saving the effort of changing trains and dragging bags. Lockers cannot send bags from Kyoto back to Osaka, but you can book a transfer in that direction too; see the transfer options below.

How do you book a transfer?

Lanytrip offers transfers between central Osaka and central Kyoto, as well as 10-hour private car charters in central Osaka or Kyoto, in vehicles such as the Alphard or HiAce, with the family and luggage in one car. On moving day you do not drag bags through train changes or race the 14:00 locker cut-off.

  • Central Osaka hotel → central Kyoto hotel: Good for families with older parents, kids or lots of luggage who do not want to change trains with bags on moving day. If you arrive before check-in, ask the hotel whether you can leave your bags and head out sightseeing light.
  • Central Kyoto hotel → central Osaka hotel: Good for travelers heading back to Osaka from Kyoto with lots of luggage, since lockers cannot send bags from Kyoto to Osaka. If your last night is in Osaka and you fly from Kansai Airport the next day, ask about an airport transfer at the same time.
  • Stay in Osaka, spend a day in Kyoto by private car: Good for families staying in Osaka who want a day in Kyoto without changing to the Nara Line or Keihan. Fushimi Inari and Gion are both in central Kyoto; if you want longer somewhere, just tell the driver.

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan Osaka to Kyoto

Things to watch for

JR, Hankyu and Keihan stop at different stations, and neither Hankyu nor Keihan goes to JR Kyoto Station, so check your hotel's nearest station before choosing. On the Shinkansen, bags over 160 cm in total dimensions need an oversized-baggage seat booked in advance, and the Kansai Area Pass is no longer sold.

How to plan the day

Take the JR Special Rapid to Kyoto Station, Hankyu to Kawaramachi, and the Keihan from Yodoyabashi to Gion. On moving day, send bags to your Kyoto hotel from an Osaka station in the morning (before 14:00) and sightsee hands-free; with lots of luggage, older parents or kids, book a transfer from your Osaka hotel to your Kyoto hotel.

Why we suggest booking a transfer

The train itself takes only about half an hour; the tiring part is dragging bags to the station, changing inside stations and finding the next hotel. A transfer goes from your Osaka hotel door straight to your Kyoto hotel with no changes, and works from Kyoto back to Osaka too, and a 10-hour charter lets you spend a day in Kyoto as well. See the transfer options above, or message us on LINE to plan your trip.
