This guide to getting from Narita Airport to central Tokyo covers journey times and fares for the Skyliner, N'EX, buses and fixed-fare taxis, how to book an airport transfer, and besides a transfer, which train suits each area.

Quick take
  • The Skyliner runs direct to Nippori in as little as 36 minutes; for Ueno, Asakusa or Nippori, a pre-booked transfer or the Skyliner is the smoothest way in
  • Staying in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa or near Tokyo Station? The N'EX gets you there with no changes, reaching Tokyo Station in about 53 minutes
  • On a budget, the TYO-NRT bus to Tokyo Station is 1,500 yen for adults, though late-night and early-morning services cost more
  • After the train or bus, you still drag your luggage through a transfer and on to the hotel, which is hardest with a large suitcase and a stroller
  • For groups of 3 or more, lots of luggage, older parents, kids or a late arrival, a pre-booked transfer takes you straight to your hotel door; see the transfer options below

What are the ways to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo?

The 5 common ways into Tokyo from Narita are the Skyliner, the Narita Express (N'EX), the TYO-NRT bus, the Limousine Bus and fixed-fare taxis. The Skyliner is fastest and the TYO-NRT bus is cheapest, but the right choice depends on where you are staying, how many of you there are and how much luggage you have.

What three things should you check before choosing?

What usually leads people to the wrong choice is not speed but how many people, how many bags and what time you land. For one person the Skyliner is the best value; for four adults, add up four tickets and compare that with one car.

The Skyliner and N'EX both have large-luggage areas, but you still drag your bags through a transfer and on to the hotel after you arrive, and with a 28-inch suitcase plus a stroller that is the hardest part. If your flight is late or immigration is slow, you may miss the service you planned to take, and the TYO-NRT bus's 1,500 yen fare does not apply to late-night and early-morning services.

Skyliner or N'EX: which should you take, and how much are they?

Both are the fastest choice for one or two people travelling light; the difference is where they end. Staying around Ueno, Asakusa or Nippori, take the Skyliner; staying near Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku, take the N'EX with no changes.

Skyliner: direct to Nippori and Keisei Ueno

It leaves from Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station and Terminal 2·3 Station and runs non-stop to Nippori and Keisei Ueno, up to 3 trains an hour. Child fares apply to ages 6–11 (including 12-year-olds still in elementary school), and return tickets can only be exchanged at the two Narita Airport stations, not at Ueno or Nippori.

Ticket Standard fare Online discount

Children 1,290 yen
Adults 2,310 yen
Children 1,150 yen
Return Adults 5,160 yen
Children 2,580 yen
Adults 4,500 yen
Children 2,240 yen

Narita Express N'EX: no changes to Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku

JR East's airport express reaches Tokyo Station in as little as 53 minutes from Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station. Ordinary cars are all reserved seating, with luggage areas (no booking needed) and power outlets, and the "N'EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket" for overseas visitors covers one trip each way within 14 days.

Ticket Fare
One way to Tokyo Station (ordinary car) Adults 3,140 yen
One way to Shinjuku (ordinary car) Adults 3,330 yen
N'EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket Adults 5,200 yen

How much is the bus to Tokyo?

The TYO-NRT bus runs between Narita Airport and Tokyo Station for 1,500 yen one way for adults, taking about 65 minutes at best, the cheapest of these options. That fare does not cover late-night and early-morning services, so on a late flight check that day's fare and last bus first.

The Limousine Bus goes to major stations and large hotels, with fares and times that vary by route. If your hotel is on a route you skip a stretch of luggage-dragging; if not, you still need another train or a taxi after you get off.

With a big group or lots of luggage, taxi or transfer?

Narita has fixed-fare taxis to Tokyo's 23 wards, with a set fare per car that depends on the zone and the route taken. Tolls are extra, a late-night surcharge applies from 22:00 to 5:00, and the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line costs extra too.

Taxi ranks are at Terminal 1 No. 15, Terminal 2 Nos. 28 and 31-A, and the Terminal 3 taxi rank. With older parents, a stroller or a landing after 10 pm, changing trains and dragging bags is the hardest part, so riding straight to your hotel door makes a big difference. To settle passengers, luggage and flight details in advance and not have to find a car after landing, see the airport transfers below.

How do you book an airport transfer?

Lanytrip offers one-way transfers between Narita Airport and central Tokyo in vehicles such as the Alphard or HiAce, matched to your group and luggage. If you want to start sightseeing straight after landing, or fit in one more day on the way to the airport, there is also a 5-hour Tokyo private car with a one-way Narita transfer.

  • Narita Airport → hotel in central Tokyo: Good for groups of 3 or more, lots of luggage, older parents, kids or strollers, anyone who would rather not drag bags through Nippori or Tokyo Station. If you land late or immigration takes a while, there is no train or bus to miss.
  • Hotel in central Tokyo → Narita Airport: Good for families heading home with more bags and souvenirs who do not want to squeeze large suitcases onto a train. If your hotel is far from a station, getting in at the hotel door saves the most effort.
  • 5-hour Tokyo private car + one-way Narita transfer: Good for morning arrivals who want to start exploring right away, or anyone who wants one last loop of the city on the way to the airport. It works in reverse on your way home too: pick-up at the hotel, sightseeing, then straight to Narita.

Which train works best for each area of Tokyo?

For every area, the smoothest way in is a pre-booked transfer, or one direct train. A transfer goes from the arrivals hall straight to your hotel door, so every area is equally easy, and it makes the biggest difference when your hotel is far from a station or you have lots of luggage.

If you take the train, pick one by area: for Ueno, Nippori and Asakusa take the Skyliner, which runs direct to Keisei Ueno and Nippori; for Tokyo Station, Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Shinagawa take the N'EX, with no changes to Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya or Shinagawa.

Summary: what to watch for and how to plan your trip from Narita to Tokyo

Things to watch for

Narita is a long way from central Tokyo: even the fastest trains take 36–53 minutes, and you still drag your luggage through a transfer and on to the hotel. The TYO-NRT bus's 1,500 yen fare does not cover late-night and early-morning services, and fixed-fare taxis add tolls and a late-night surcharge from 22:00 to 5:00.

How to plan the day

After landing, choose by area: the Skyliner for Ueno, the N'EX for Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station, and the TYO-NRT bus to save money. For an easier trip home, ride from your hotel straight to Narita; if you still want to sightsee on your last day, book a 5-hour private car that drops you at the airport.

Why we suggest a pre-booked transfer

The tiring parts are dragging bags through transfers and racing for the last service after a late landing. A transfer takes you from the arrivals hall straight to your hotel door, older parents and kids can rest as soon as they get in, and nobody has to lift bags on and off trains. See the 3 transfer options above, or message us on LINE to plan yours.
