This is a guide to a day trip to Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto, covering how to get there from Osaka, how to see the bamboo grove and the Golden Pavilion, what to know in autumn leaf season, and 3 private car routes from Osaka.

Key points
  • By train from Osaka to Arashiyama, you change once either way: Hankyu at Katsura for the Arashiyama Line, or JR at Kyoto Station for the Sagano Line
  • There is no direct train between Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji; take a Kyoto City Bus to "Kinkakujimichi"
  • Kinkaku-ji is open 9:00–17:00, every day of the year; adults (high school and up) 500 yen, elementary and junior high students 300 yen
  • Tenryu-ji garden opens 8:30, and from 7:30 on 14–30 November 2026, so you can start early in leaf season
  • Seeing both areas in one day with older parents or kids? See the private car routes below, with pick-up at your hotel in central Osaka

How do you get from Osaka to Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji?

There are two ways to reach Arashiyama from Osaka, Hankyu and JR, and both involve one change. On Hankyu, take a Limited Express or Commuter Limited Express bound for Kyoto-kawaramachi from Osaka-umeda and change at Katsura for the Arashiyama Line. On JR, go from Osaka to Kyoto Station and change to the Sagano Line for Saga-Arashiyama.

Option Route Arashiyama station
Hankyu Osaka-umeda → Katsura
Arashiyama Line (about 7 min)
Hankyu Arashiyama
(15 min walk to Tenryu-ji)
JR Osaka → Kyoto
Sagano Line
JR Saga-Arashiyama
(13 min walk to Tenryu-ji)

Walking times are from Tenryu-ji's access page. Keifuku Arashiyama Station is right in front of Tenryu-ji.

Kinkaku-ji has no train station nearby, so take a Kyoto City Bus to the "Kinkakujimichi" stop; the temple lists routes 12, 59, 205 and M1. Fitting both Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji into a day from Osaka means at least 3 rides by train and bus. If you'd rather not keep changing with older parents or kids, see the private car routes below.

Can you do Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji in one day?

Yes. Arashiyama in the morning and Kinkaku-ji in the afternoon works best. Here is Lanytrip's private car plan, using a 09:00 departure from your Osaka hotel as an example:

Time Plan
09:00 Leave your Osaka hotel for Arashiyama
10:30–11:45 Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Nonomiya Shrine
12:00–13:30 Lunch in Arashiyama
13:30–14:30 Togetsukyo Bridge, Arashiyama shopping street
15:10–16:10 Kinkaku-ji
16:10 Head back to your Osaka hotel

Drive time to Arashiyama depends on your hotel. If you add the Sagano Romantic Train or the Hozugawa river boat, the plan is adjusted to their schedules.

That gives you about 4 hours in Arashiyama (with lunch) and 1 hour at Kinkaku-ji. Kinkaku-ji closes at 17:00, so arriving around 15:00 is just right. By train, the Arashiyama-to-Kinkaku-ji leg means switching to a city bus, one more wait and one more change.

How should you explore Arashiyama?

The bamboo grove, Nonomiya Shrine, Togetsukyo Bridge and the shopping street can all be linked on foot; on the private car plan you also walk from the bamboo grove to lunch. The spots below follow the classic route order, with Tenryu-ji at the end.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Nonomiya Shrine

Suggested stay: about 75 min

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove path
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

The bamboo grove path is Arashiyama's signature walk, lined with towering bamboo and the quiet scenery of Sagano. Nonomiya Shrine sits inside the grove; the shrine calls itself the shrine of The Tale of Genji and enshrines deities of good relationships, children and learning.

Nonomiya Shrine black wooden torii
Nonomiya Shrine

Nonomiya is best known for its kuroki torii, made from oak logs with the bark left on, the oldest style of torii in Japan. After praying, the shrine invites you to stroke the "okame-ishi" stone while making a wish. The shrine is small, so carry on south to Togetsukyo afterwards.

Togetsukyo Bridge and Arashiyama shopping street

Suggested stay: about 60 min

Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River, Arashiyama
Togetsukyo Bridge

Togetsukyo spans the Katsura River and is Arashiyama's landmark, with mountain views that change with every season; autumn brings the red leaves. The Arashiyama shopping street is lined with snack and souvenir shops, good for eating as you walk, and you can have lunch around here too.

Tenryu-ji

Suggested stay: about 45 min

Tenryu-ji is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" World Heritage Site, with the Sogenchi and Hyakkaen gardens. The classic route doesn't include it; if you want more time in a garden, see routes 2 and 3 below. Entry is through the garden reception or the north gate reception.

Tenryu-ji Hours Adult
Garden 8:30–17:00
(last entry 16:50)
500 yen
Halls
(Ohojo etc.)
8:30–16:45
(last entry 16:30)
Garden ticket
+300 yen
Hatto
"Cloud Dragon"
9:00–16:30
(last entry 16:20)
500 yen

Adult means high school age and up; the garden is 300 yen for elementary and junior high students and free for preschoolers. The Hatto is charged separately and opens daily from 19 September to 6 December 2026, otherwise on weekends and holidays only.

What are Kinkaku-ji's hours and admission?

Kinkaku-ji

Suggested stay: about 60 min

Kinkaku-ji reflected in Kyoko-chi pond
Kinkaku-ji

Kinkaku-ji's official name is Rokuon-ji; its Golden Pavilion relic hall is so famous that everyone calls it Kinkaku-ji. It began as the villa of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third Muromachi shogun, and the golden hall reflected in Kyoko-chi pond is one of Kyoto's most classic views.

Kinkaku-ji Hours / admission
Opening hours 9:00–17:00
(open every day)
Adult (high school and up) 500 yen
Elementary / junior high 300 yen

Cash and cashless payments such as "Omairi Pay" are accepted (not for amulets or goshuin). There are no group discounts.

With a stroller or wheelchair, you can reach the side of the Golden Pavilion without major steps. Beyond that there are stairs, and the temple asks wheelchair users, stroller users and anyone with limited mobility to turn back before the stairs and leave via the entrance. Wheelchairs can be borrowed if available; no reservations.

What should you know about Arashiyama in autumn?

The Arashiyama Hoshokai notes that Heian nobles loved the autumn leaves of Arashiyama and Mt. Ogura, and the Arashiyama Momiji Festival is held every year on the second Sunday of November; in 2026 it runs 7–8 November. To take Arashiyama at an easy pace in leaf season, start early and go to Tenryu-ji first.

Tenryu-ji garden Opens
Usual 8:30
Special early visits
14–30 Nov 2026
7:30
(garden reception only)

During the early visit period, the north gate reception still opens at 8:30.

In leaf season trains and city buses get crowded, and changing with luggage or a stroller is even more tiring. With a private car you can leave Osaka early and be in Tenryu-ji's garden at 7:30, then move on to the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo, and Kinkaku-ji in the afternoon.

Is a private car a good idea with older parents or kids?

Yes. On your own you change trains once and then switch to a city bus, plus another ride between Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji. With Lanytrip's private car, the driver picks you up and drops you off at your hotel in central Osaka:

  • 10 hours of car use: Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji in one car, no hunting for stations or waiting for buses.
  • Chinese-speaking driver: talk through the day's plan directly with the driver.
  • One price per car, no sharing: works for families and friends, with an Alphard or similar, or a Toyota HiAce.

Which private car routes work for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji?

All 3 routes start from a hotel in central Osaka, with opening hours taken from the official information above. We can adjust the order with you based on your start time and where you want more time.
