The Mekong Delta is not one attraction but a vast region of rivers, orchards, villages and cities. For a first trip from Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho and Ben Tre are the easiest day-trip combination. To see an early floating market, stay at least one night in Can Tho.

A hand-rowed sampan through water-coconut canals is a classic My Tho and Ben Tre experience.

My Tho, Ben Tre or Can Tho?

Destination Time Highlights Best for
My Tho / Ben Tre HCMC day trip Large boat, sampan, orchards, honey tea and coconut candy First visits and limited time
Can Tho 2 days / 1 night+ Early river markets, waterfront city and local food Deeper river-life experience
Cai Be / Vinh Long 1–2 days Orchards, villages, cycling and homestays Slow travel and countryside

Tickets, prices and what tours include

There is no single Mekong Delta admission ticket. Independent travellers pay separately for HCMC transport, large boats, sampans, island transfers, guides, meals and experiences. For a tour, check whether hotel transfer, both boat types, lunch, Vinh Trang Pagoda, orchard activities and a guide are included. Tips for sampan rowers, drivers and guides are often separate.

Best time to visit

November to April is the drier season and generally easier for road and walking plans. May to October brings more afternoon rain but lush scenery and seasonal fruit. Can Tho’s market requires an early start, so it is not practical as a rushed HCMC day trip. Carry sun protection, insect repellent and light rain gear year-round.

Getting there from Ho Chi Minh City

My Tho is usually 1.5–2 hours from HCMC; Ben Tre is about two hours. Public buses cost less, but you still need local transport and boat arrangements. A private day tour connects hotel transfers, boats, guide and lunch, which is convenient for families, seniors and first-time visitors.

Sample one-day route

8:30 a.m. hotel departure → Vinh Trang Pagoda → My Tho pier → Thoi Son Island fruit and honey tea → lunch → sampan through coconut canals → coconut candy workshop → return to HCMC around 4:30 p.m. Order can change with water levels, traffic and operations.
