What makes Hoan Kiem Lake special?
The lake was historically known as Luc Thuy or Ta Vong and later took the name Hoan Kiem—“Returned Sword”—from the legend of King Le Thai To. Hanoi’s culture authority notes that the lake and Ngoc Son Temple were recognized as a special national monument in 2013. How to get to Hoan Kiem Lake
From Hanoi Old Quarter
Most streets in the southern Old Quarter are a 5–15 minute walk from the lake. For such short distances, walking is usually faster than navigating narrow lanes by car.
From elsewhere in Hanoi
Use Grab, a metered taxi or a city bus. During weekend road closures, set your drop-off near St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Hanoi Opera House or the outer edge of the Old Quarter, then walk to the lake.
For a multi-attraction day
A private city charter can reduce repeated ride bookings when travelling with children or seniors, or when combining the lake with the Temple of Literature, West Lake and Train Street.
