The Mekong Delta is not one attraction but a vast region of rivers, orchards, villages and towns.
On a first trip from Ho Chi Minh City, a My Tho and Ben Tre day trip is by far the easiest option;
if you want to see a floating market at dawn, you need at least one night in Can Tho.

How much does a Mekong Delta trip cost?
There is no single ticket for the Mekong Delta.
Doing it independently, the cost splits into return transport from Ho Chi Minh City, the main riverboat, the small sampan, island transfers, a guide, meals and individual activities.
On a group day tour, check whether hotel pick-up, every boat leg, lunch, Vinh Trang Pagoda, the orchard stops and a guide are included;
tips for the sampan rowers, the driver and the guide usually are not.
When is the best time to go?
November to Aprilis the dry season, when travel and walking are most reliable;
May to Octoberbrings afternoon rain, but also the greenest riverbanks and the fruit season.
Seeing the Can Tho markets means starting before dawn, which is why they do not fit into a same-day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.
It is hot and humid all year, so bring sun protection, insect repellent and light rain gear.
Getting from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta
Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho takes about 1.5–2 hours, and Ben Tre about 2 hours;
public buses are cheaper, but you still have to arrange the pier and local transport once you arrive.
A private day trip collects you from your hotel and links the boats, guide and lunch for you — which is why it suits families, older travellers and first-timers.
A one-day route from Ho Chi Minh City
08:30 hotel pick-up → Vinh Trang Pagoda → My Tho pier → Thoi Son Island orchards and honey tea → lunch → sampan ride through the nipa palms → coconut candy workshop → back in Ho Chi Minh City around 16:30.
