Sa Pa is a mountain town in northern Vietnam known for rice terraces, drifting cloud and hill-tribe villages. Fansipan, at 3,143 m (10,312 ft), is the highest peak in Vietnam and Indochina. The two are almost always visited on the same trip: plan at least 2 days and 1 night, or 3 days and 2 nights if you also want the valleys and terraced fields.
What are Sa Pa and Fansipan?
Sa Pa town centre
The Stone Church, the central square, Sun Plaza and a row of mountain-view cafés are all within walking distance. It is the easiest thing to do on arrival day, and it lets you decide about Fansipan once you have seen tomorrow's forecast.
Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van
This is where the rice terraces, valleys and villages are. The views are spread out rather than concentrated at one viewpoint, so a half-day or full-day private car with short walks in between saves a lot of time hunting for rides.
Cat Cat Village
The closest village to town, with hillside houses, streams and craft demonstrations. There are plenty of steps and slopes, so wear shoes with grip — and ask before photographing residents or private homes.
Fansipan
Most visitors ride the cable car up. From the upper station it is another 600 steps or so to the top, or you can buy a separate summit funicular ticket to get most of the way. The summit is noticeably colder than Sa Pa town, and thick cloud or rain can close in on the view.

Opening hours and how long to allow
- Typical park hours:Around 07:30–17:00; the last cable car and each train service may stop earlier.
- Fansipan:Allow at least 4–5 hours, covering queues, transfers, walking at the summit and changes in weather.
- Sa Pa town:About 2–3 hours.
- Villages and rice terraces:Half a day to a full day, depending on how far you walk and how you travel between them.
How to get to the top of Fansipan
- Start at Sun Plaza
It sits in the centre of Sa Pa town; from here the Muong Hoa mountain train runs to the cable car station. - Ride the Fansipan cable car
The ride takes about 15 minutes, with views over Muong Hoa Valley and the Hoang Lien Son range. - Walk or take the summit train
From the upper station you can climb the steps to the peak, or buy the summit funicular if you are travelling with older parents, young children or anyone who tires easily.
A 2-day, 1-night Sa Pa itinerary
- Day 1:Arrive in Sa Pa → drop bags at the hotel → town centre, Stone Church and Sun Plaza → a mountain-view café.
- Day 2:Fansipan in the morning → head back to Hanoi in the afternoon, timed around your transport.
If you also want Lao Chai, Ta Van, Muong Hoa Valley or Cat Cat Village, add a night rather than squeezing the villages and Fansipan into one day.
What travellers need to know
- The summit can be more than 10°C colder than town, so bring a windproof jacket in any season, plus rain gear and non-slip shoes in the wet months.
- Altitude can bring on headaches or breathlessness — walk slowly and drink water. If you have a heart or lung condition, or a history of altitude sickness, talk to your doctor first.
- Neither a cloud sea nor a clear view can be guaranteed. If the summit view is the main reason you are going, two nights gives you a second chance at the weather.
- The journey between Hanoi and Sa Pa is long in each direction, so a same-day round trip is not realistic.
