Da Nang to Hoi An: Private Car, Grab or Shuttle Bus Compared

📅 Updated: 29 July 2026

Da Nang to Hoi An is about 30 km, usually 40–50 minutes by road.
For the least hassle, book a private car; for one or two people moving on the spur of the moment, compare Grab;
and if you are travelling solo with flexible timing, a per-person shared shuttle is the cheapest. Prices move with the date, pick-up and drop-off points, vehicle type and peak demand, so treat the live quote as the real one.

Private car, Grab and shuttle bus: prices compared

Option Typical price Journey time Strengths Watch out for
Private car Quoted by one-way or return, vehicle type and date About 40–50 minutes; departure time is yours to set Direct, easy with luggage, and the return trip is secured Needs booking ahead; high season, outlying areas and late nights may cost more
GrabCar About 250,000–400,000 VND (US$10–15) per car, one way About 40–60 minutes, plus waiting for the car Book instantly in the app and see the fare before you ride Surge pricing at peak times; getting a car back from Hoi An late in the evening can take a while
Shared shuttle bus About 130,000–180,000 VND (US$5–7) per person, one way About 60–90 minutes, depending on the pick-up order Usually the cheapest if you are travelling alone Fixed departures, possible detours to collect others; check the rules for large suitcases first

These are common market ranges for 2026, not guaranteed fares. Grab prices are set by the app based on demand at that moment;
shuttle prices vary by operator, hotel pick-up zone and luggage rules; and for a private car, the price that counts is the one shown after you select a plan on the product page.

Private car: easiest with a group, children or a late return

With three or more people, once the vehicle rate is split, the gap between a private car and booking two separate Grab rides narrows considerably.
The value is not only the ride itself — it is knowing the pick-up point, vehicle, luggage space and return time in advance.

  • You are travelling with older parents, babies or large suitcases.
  • You want to stay in Hoi An until the lanterns are lit and then return to Da Nang.
  • You want to add stops such as the Marble Mountains or My Khe Beach along the way.
  • You would rather not re-book a ride and wait for a driver at the busiest time of day.

Grab: the most flexible way for one or two people

The advantage of Grab is that you see the fare in the app before you go — no negotiating.
Enter your Hoi An hotel address from central Da Nang or the airport, then check the vehicle class, passenger count and luggage space before confirming.

  • Check the plate, the driver's name and the destination before getting in.
  • Airport pick-up points can be separate from the regular taxi rank — follow the app's directions.
  • Between 17:00 and 18:30, in rain, on holidays and at weekends, expect surge pricing or a longer wait.
  • Do not just type “Hoi An Ancient Town”. If you have a hotel booked, entering the full hotel address is far more accurate.
Getting back:When the Ancient Town empties out in the evening, everyone wants a ride at once and Grab may not have a car immediately. With older parents, children or an early flight the next day, arrange your return in advance.

Shared shuttle bus: cheapest solo, but you travel on their schedule

Shuttles are priced per person, which suits solo travellers and anyone not in a hurry.
Some services leave from Da Nang Airport, the railway station or set city hotels; others do hotel-by-hotel pick-ups, which makes the total journey longer than a private car.

  • When booking, check whether it is a fixed meeting point or a hotel pick-up.
  • Check the last departure, the cancellation policy and child fares.
  • If you have a suitcase over 28 inches, a pushchair or several bags, ask about extra charges first.
  • For red-eye flights or very early or late arrivals, the timetable may not connect at all.

Getting from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An

Da Nang International Airport is about 30 km from Hoi An.

Arriving during the day, travelling light and on your own? Compare the shuttle first;
one or two people can open Grab and check the live fare;
and for a group, a late flight, or if you want someone waiting for your flight, a pre-booked private car is the safest.

Hoi An back to Da Nang: plan the return too

Plenty of travellers head to Hoi An in the afternoon and only return once the lanterns are lit.
With Grab, start checking cars and prices 20–30 minutes before you want to leave;
if you need to be back at your hotel or the airport at a set time, a return private car is much easier to control.
Cars are banned from parts of the old town core, so the actual pick-up point depends on the traffic restrictions or on what you agree with your driver.
